The Five Most Interesting Reasons for Candidates getting rejected in BPO/BPM Job Interviews

If you work just for money, you’ll never make it, but if you love what you’re doing and always put the customer first, success will be yours. — Ray Croc
1. Use of English as second/third language
When English is not your native language (mother tongue), you tend to speak English with a lot of effort. That affects fluency and also correctness of word usage. This hampers effective communication and thus the candidate is regarded not suitable for the job role that requires convincing skills, push sales, query resolution and such others.
2. Influence of Regional Accents, Dialects
Depending on the region or the province or locality of the country they belong, the candidates at times possess certain typical accents. Thus even though they are speaking the same English language the meanings, interpretation or implication of their speeches differ causing confusion and conflicts. Candidates who possess strong mother tongue influence are out rightly rejected in BPM/BPO industry. These candidates should immediately undergo refresher courses to unlearn/undo their accents. Pidgin
3. Not Enough Clarity in Speech
When a person speaks in an ultra-low or thin voice or, his voice might not reach the listeners and might cause irritation or impatience. In such a scenario, communicating to the clients or customers might reverse the effect of relationship building and customer care services. Candidates identified with a skill gap should immediately undergo a session that focuses on speaking loudly and clearly with proper pauses and intonation for better understanding.
4. Use of Jargons, Slangs, Abbreviations, Short Forms or Colloquial Dialect
Jargons (be it technical, medical, legal or any other) vary according to the profession and area of expertise. These words would be difficult to comprehend by people of other professions and should best be avoided or clarified. Slangs or colloquial terms, for example, ‘grass’ as in the sense of ‘marijuana’ is a slang use of the actual green vegetation cover, or even the informal British use of ‘grass’ as a ‘police informer’. The short forms such as BP for blood pressure or the chat language short form LOL for ‘laugh out loud’ or BRB for ‘be right back’ might create incomplete comprehension and must be avoided in formal conversation.
5. Inappropriate Choice of Words, Words with Negative Connotations and Clichés
Sometimes a group of words may appear as synonyms and might be used interchangeably but at specific instances they might convey a wrong message. They add to awkwardness, vagueness and want of clarity of speech/communication. Let us try and understand this by means of examples.

Words are free. It’s how you use them may cost you.
Examples of inappropriate choice of words:
· Use of ‘childish’ instead of ‘innocent’
· Use of ‘insure’ instead of ‘ensure’ and vice versa: ‘Insure’ is used in commercial sense for providing compensation in case of any loss or damage while ‘ensure’ means making sure.
· Use of ‘improper’ versus ‘incorrect’: Improper carries the mild implication of sexually provocative or lewdness while incorrect simply means wrong
Examples of Words and Phrases with Negative Connotations
· Use of ‘juvenile’ instead of ‘youthfulness’
· Use of ‘deceitful’ instead of tricky
· Using “you can do better” instead of “you are worthless or incompetent” is always more positive
· Using “you should do it this way” instead of “don’t do it that way” is more encouraging
Examples of clichés
· ‘I would agree to disagree’ better expressed as I ‘disagree’
· ‘Let the cat be out of the bag’ better expressed as ‘tell me’
· ‘Play it by ear’ can be simply expressed as ‘let it be as it is’

So in order to succeed in BPO/BPM job interviews, be to the point and maintain clarity of speech. Also avoid slang, jargon or colloquial terminologies and inappropriate word usage. Correct grammar, syntax and positive presentation are of primary importance.
